Maria Lopez was just a child when she became a prostitute in the early 1980s. Here she describes how she was pulled into working on the streets and how three decades later, she made so much wealth. Some people will find Maria's account upsetting.
This is my interview with one of the greats in the sex business who started very early and has grown to become the richest and most intelligent in the prostitution business. I introduce to you Maria Lopez, a woman who has been in the sex business for over 37 years.
This is my interview with one of the greats in the sex business who started very early and has grown to become the richest and most intelligent in the prostitution business. I introduce to you Maria Lopez, a woman who has been in the sex business for over 37 years.
We take you into her world and share with you her experiences in the business and how she was able to amass such a wealth in the red light district. Here her in her own words…
Can you
introduce yourself?
My name is
Maria Lopez, I am originally from New Mexico, but I am now from New York City,
where dreams are made.
That is nice to hear, talking about dreams, did you ever plan of a sex worker?
No one ever
plans to be in the business of prostitution, it just happened when I moved in
from New Mexico into the Bronx in 1982, I had nowhere to stay, so in order to
survive, my neighbor in the apartment I stayed in the projects introduced me to
the business. She was an African American and at the time, I was the only white
woman in the trade and everybody wanted to have a piece of me.
Did this
cause envy?
Of course it
did. I was involved in so many fights that the boss of the club decided that I should
work elsewhere. I took the trade home and with the help of the boss William Tabo,
I turned my apartment to my office until I had another place to ply the trade
in manhattan. This has been the best part of my life. This is where I loved the
trade.
How do you
mean?
This is
where I made money from the white boys. They paid good money and I was able to
invest these monies wisely.
What did you
invest in?
You know I knew
I was never going to do this forever, so with a little knowledge on financial
investment, I talk to my bankers who assisted me in getting investment
officers. I invested in stocks and properties and when there was a boom, I made
as much as 7 million dollars in a particular year. That was in 1987.
How did you
protect yourself?
From what?
From diseases
and marauders?
Ok. I try to
be friendly with everybody even though I was flamboyant. I was very proud of my
business but I did not rub it on everybody’s face. I kept a low profile in my
neighbourhood before they accuse me of stealing their husbands…I made it a point that I was never going to have sex with anyone if they refused to use condoms. This is one of the many reasons that has kept me strong in terms of health.
(Cuts in…)Were
you ever married?
No. but I have
two lovely daughters who are doing well in their lives. Back to your last question.
I know it’s a dirty world out there, I have been in near death scenarios three
times and mysteriously I escaped with my life. All in all, I would say God has
protected me from the marauders. In this business, I have lost six friends to
drugs, rape and assassination. Even Angela, the girl who introduced me to this
trade died when she did not return from following a client home. That case has
not been resolved even today. So, sometimes, I depend on recommendations before
following anybody home.
Are you
still in the trade?
Yes.
For real?
Yes, I still
have clients who come to have a taste of an old lady.
They must be
old too?
Not all of
them. It may surprise you that there are a lot of young men out there who wants
to taste a cougar. They want to know what its’ like to taste a wrinkled p***y.
In fact, that is where I make the bulk of the money these days.
What is your
advice to this generation of sex workers?
I would
advice that they invest their money properly and take care of their health and
bodies. They should always remember that beauty fades, so they have a limited
time to make the best of it.
Thank you Maria Lopez, we at sidereport are happy for the time you gave us.
